Job Title: Mounted Police Officer Department: Mounted Branch / Territorial Support Group (varies by force) Location: Various (depending on police force area) Reports To: Mounted Section Sergeant or Inspector Job Purpose: To provide specialist policing services using horses for crowd control, high-visibility patrols, ceremonial duties, and community engagement, supporting operational policing across the force area. Key Responsibilities: Public Order Management: Assist in crowd control at public events, protests, and demonstrations. Provide a visible and mobile presence during football matches, parades, and festivals. Disperse or contain crowds safely and effectively using horses where necessary. Patrol Duties: Conduct high-visibility patrols in urban, rural, and parkland areas to deter crime and reassure the public. Patrol areas that are less accessible to vehicles or foot patrols. Community Engagement: Act as ambassadors for the police, fostering positive community relations. Engage with the public, including schools, events, and local groups, promoting trust and understanding. Ceremonial Duties: Participate in state occasions, remembrance services, royal events, and civic ceremonies. Represent the force in parades and official functions. Animal Welfare and Stable Duties: Maintain the health, fitness, and welfare of assigned horses. Perform daily grooming, feeding, mucking out, tack cleaning, and veterinary care tasks. Exercise horses and ensure they are adequately trained for policing duties. Training and Readiness: Undergo regular training in equestrian skills, public order tactics, and mounted patrol procedures. Maintain physical fitness and mounted competency in line with force standards. Required Skills and Qualifications: Must be a serving police officer (PC or above) or eligible for internal transfer. Strong riding ability – prior equestrian experience is highly desirable, though some forces offer internal training. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain calm under pressure, especially in large or hostile crowds. Physical fitness and confidence in handling large animals. Commitment to animal welfare and routine care responsibilities. Working Conditions: Shift-based work, including weekends, public holidays, and irregular hours. Exposure to all weather conditions during outdoor patrols and events. Physically demanding, including riding for extended periods and manual stable work. Risk of injury from horses or crowd situations. Desirable Attributes: Experience in public order policing or community engagement roles. Formal riding qualifications (e.g., BHS stages) are an advantage. Knowledge of horse care, stable management, and equine first aid. Career Path & Progression: Progression to Sergeant or Inspector roles within the Mounted Branch. Opportunities to specialize in public order command or training.
