Twelve German tanks lay burning in the 9th January Square in Stalingrad, their crews entombed in twisted metal. In their way? A single ordinary apartment building. Inside, Junior Sergeant Yakov Pavlov had turned this strategic Soviet position into a deadly strongpoint against the advancing Wehrmacht in September of 1942. Just reaching the apartment was a Nazi obsession. But trying to knock on the door of this modest four-story abode already cost more Nazi lives than the entire fall of Paris.
