The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on graduate medical education programs across the country has been tremendous. HSS runs a large ACGME-accredited orthopaedic residency program, as well as 20 musculoskeletal fellowships. Training leaders in orthopaedics and rheumatology during a time of crisis offered an exceptional experience for residents and fellows to activate and serve on the front lines of critical patient care. Dr. Mathias P. Bostrom, Chief of Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Service, and Dr. Laura Robbins, Senior Vice President, HSS Education Institute and Global Affairs discuss how HSS program leaders swiftly responded and rose to the challenge, the effects on its GME programs and trainees, and the lasting impact COVID-19 will have on GME.
