I answer a lot of women’s health questions in my practice, but the #1 question I get asked is about bladder slings and meshes. Probably not what you expected, right? Most patients don’t know about these terms until they’re mentioned by a provider for treating urinary incontinence. The term “sling” is kind of a misnomer (“Urethral hammock” doesn’t have the same ring to it, I guess) and can actually refer to several popular, easy, and safe procedures to treat urinary incontinence. These procedures use permanent sutures called meshes, which have gotten a bad rap over the years. This is also a common reason why patients ask questions about slings and meshes!
