The Philips CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive) was an ambitious multimedia system launched in the early 1990s by Philips. Designed to bridge the gap between gaming consoles, computers, and home entertainment, it used CD-based technology to deliver interactive movies, educational titles, music, and video games. The CD-i aimed to make use of the emerging CD format by offering full-motion video and multimedia experiences long before DVDs became common. While the idea was ahead of its time, the execution struggled. The hardware was underpowered for serious gaming, and the library leaned heavily on educational and experimental titles rather than blockbuster hits. Despite this, the CD-i is fondly remembered for quirky and unique releases such as Hotel Mario and the infamous Zelda games, which have become cult favourites for their odd charm. Beyond games, the CD-i was also used for corporate training, museums, and interactive presentations, showing its flexibility as an early multimedia platform. Though it never achieved mainstream success, the Philips CD-i remains a fascinating piece of gaming and tech history, a reminder of a bold attempt to redefine home entertainment that ultimately paved the way for later multimedia innovations.
