The Primary Assessment (A-B-C-D-E) is one of the fastest ways to organize your actions during resuscitation and acute emergencies. In this lesson, we break down Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure—and highlight the monitoring cues that help you make better decisions under pressure: A – Airway: What “airway” really means and how to escalate support: head tilt–chin lift → OPA/NPA → advanced airway as needed. Oxygenation vs Ventilation (don’t mix these up): ▪️Oxygenation = SpO₂ (pulse oximetry). If low, give oxygen with a target SpO₂ 94–99%. ▪️Ventilation = EtCO₂ (waveform capnography). The lesson reviews a “normal” EtCO₂ range of 35–45 mmHg. B – Breathing: Assess whether the patient is breathing adequately; if not, support with bag-valve-mask (BVM) ventilations. C – Circulation: If there’s no pulse, start high-quality chest compressions. Learn how capnography can help assess CPR effectiveness (ex: EtCO₂ less than 10 during compressions suggests poor CPR) and how arterial line diastolic pressure may help in monitored settings. D – Disability: Rapid neuro check using AVPU (Alert, Verbal, Pain, Unresponsive). E – Exposure: Why you must expose to assess (retractions, lung sounds on skin), while also keeping the patient warm and protected. If this helped, like the video and comment what you want covered next—airway adjuncts, capnography basics, or CPR quality metrics.
