The tremor hit at 11:15 pm, with its epicenter about 80 kilometres off the coast, and at a depth of 50 kilometres. The impact of the quake was strong. In some places, like Hachinohe, the shaking reached an “upper-6” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale. That level of shaking is extremely powerful—strong enough to knock people off their feet, topple heavy furniture, and cause damage to buildings. Early reports say at least 30 people were injured, many of them hit by falling objects. One house caught fire, several roads cracked open, and in a few locations vehicles even slipped into holes created by ground shifts. Around 90,000 residents were told to evacuate as aftershocks continued through the night. Rail services, including parts of the bullet-train network, were suspended. And thousands of homes lost power, with the worst-hit areas seeing nearly 2,700 households in complete darkness. Videos shared on social media showed chandeliers swaying, cars shaking, aquariums sloshing, and shop interiors trembling violently.
