Mixing Flaps, Flaperons and Crow on my DX18 and AR9350 on my Flyzone Seawind - Jan 4, 2016

See flaperons on the full-scale Seawind...    • The Certified Seawind 300C      • The Certified Seawind 300C   Since the November, 2015 announcement of the up-and-coming December 2015 Flyzone Seawind release, I've spent some time on the RC Groups forums, waiting for specific release dates and sneak peaks. Once I received my Seawind and installed my new AR9350 receiver, I've continued my time investment on the forums for tips-and-trick for the receiver and for the plane. While on the AS3X receiver forums, I looked for tips on aileron mixing for sailplane-like mixes, where I hit dead ends, false leads and a lot of disgruntled AS3X receiver owners. One major beef that I heard was about the inability to perform sailplane mixes and limited "modes". After considerable hours of failed radio mixing attempts, I had an "Ah Ha" moment and I gave it another try. This time I had success in mixing my "flaperon" mix with my flaps. With some review, I believed that the same method that I used for my "flaperon" feature could also be used to generate the "crow" mix as well. Additionally, that method would support multiple "flight modes" through selector switch settings on the transmitter. A correspondence with a fellow RC Groups user motivated me to put my theories to the test and document my findings. Here's a quick example of three flap deployment modes, all controlled through transmitter mixing and transmitter switch selection. Note that I have a "flaps" mode, a "flaperon" mode and a "crow" mode. This setup is in the rough as I have no intention of using the "crow" on my craft, but it shows that it can be done and it does add to the ground show! With luck, my fellow RC Groups members will take these ideas and develop more tools for their own applications. Yes, you can have receiver, stabilization, telemetry and sailplane mixing all in a single package! Thank you everyone for your help and best of luck on your own projects! Glenn -- THE SETUP DETAILS -- Greetings, Viewer! I'm glad that you're inspired by my Crow and Flaperon demonstration. Did you take time to pause at each of the screen shots of the transmitter mix settings and of the AR9350 setup screen captures? There are a couple of details that remove a lot of frustration. #1: Select "Flaperon" model in the receiver setup and DO NOT look for a "with flaps" setup option. (the radio has no need of the information and the only way to mix for crow and flaperon (that I've found) is the supplied "flaperon" model type. #2: Select TWO DIFFERENT channels for the "flap" definition. One for the transmitter and one for the receiver. They must be different channels by software definitions. The DX9's "flap" channel will be mapped to an "auxillary" channel in your receiver which will be wired to your physical flaps. (sounds simple enough) The AR7350 "flap" channel will drive the aileron "flaperon" mix. (when you drive a "negative" flap to the flaperons, they will deploy up into a "spoiler" mode, which combined with your "flaps" will give you "crow". The AR7350 will mix for aileron channels, preserving the stabilization feature. The DX9 will mix your DX9's "flap" with a switch input, causing the inverted flap signal to become that "spoiler" output though the DX9's "auxiliary" channel, that the AR7350 interprets as "flaps" to be used in the "flaperon" mix. The DX9 will output a standard "flap" signal (unprocessed) of which the AR7350 will interpret a simply an "auxillary" channel which just happens to be wired to your physical flaps. If you wire your flap servos into a "Y" splitter, you can simplify the setup as demonstrated here. However, with the "Y" splitter, you won't have the option to mix for continuous ailerons. But, you could change that setup in the future. You'll notice that I have TWO mixes in my demonstration. One mix is to drive "crow" (P-MIX 4 in my video) and one mix is to drive "flaperon" (P-MIX 3 in my video) and disabling both gives me standard flaps. If you only want "crow" (P-MIX 4 in my video) or "flaperon (P-MIX 3 in my video), you only need one DX9 mix . Let me know if you have additional questions.
