Identify them with a lanyard, hat, etc. • Fence pools and spas with adequate barriers, including four-sided fencing. This can reduce drowning in small children by more than 50 percent. • Young children and inexperienced swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but not rely on them alone. • Teach children to always ask permission to go near water. • Drowning is usually quick and silent – do not expect to hear yelling or splashing. • If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability. • Learn CPR as the first line of defense. • Have appropriate equipment, such as a floating and/or reaching object, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit. • Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate swim lessons. Information provided by the American Red Cross. Visit redcross.org for more information.
