The original Gateshead AFC played here for 30 years in the English Football League, between 1930 and 1960. They were originally were known ss South Shields and played EFL football at Horsley Hill Stadium in South Shields, before moving to Gateshead in 1930. In 1960 they were voted out of the Football League - replaced by Peterborough United FC - and eventually folded as a club in the 1970s. Redheugh Park was also demolished in the 1970s. The current Gateshead FC - currently playing in the National League - were formed in 1977 and have played at Gateshead International Stadium to this day.
