Ludwig I was a great art-lover, and much like his grandson Ludwig II, he would leave an impressive architectural legacy behind. He was on a quest to turn Munich into one of the great cultural hubs of Europe, erecting a large number of museums, a new university and national library etc. He also glorified his native Bavaria and Germany as a whole through great monuments like the Walhalla and the Hall of Liberation. Although originally quite liberal, he would soon try to centralize power to himself, and his reign would be marked by controversy and the threat of revolution. → MUSIC Op. 19b - II.
