I purchased these Canfield SBC cylinder heads way back in 1998 from Competition Products. I ran these for years on my 327ci small block chevy. I am currently working through a refresh on the engine and figured that it was time to finally address this significant flaw in the cylinder head casting. These heads were made with the parting line of the casing being right above the valve seat. This parting line left a significantly high ridge around the full circumference of the port. When they machined the head to install the valve seat, they most likely had the intention of removing this lip, but on my heads it was not touched. It was vary difficult to show the severity of this lip with the camera, but I would say that it was protrouding at least 1/8' or more into the ports. This is causing a significant loss in flow and likely creating turbulence within the port. While I had the engine apart, I removed the valves from the head and I was able to use some carbide burrs to remove the majorty of the material. I then switched to some sanding rolls to finish the clean up work in the port. The sanding rolls that I used I got from Standard Abrasives. Now I am not a head porting expert, and I did not want to get into "porting" these heads. What I did would be best described as a bowl blend. I was not trying to create a new shape to the port. I was simply trying to remove the disruption of the sharp edge and return the shape of the port to what was intended. I was very careful on the short turn radius to not remove too much material or change the intended shape, as that is one of the more critical parts of the port. It took be about 2 hours of work to clean up both heads, not counting the time to remove the valves. Part number # 23-500-65. These heads are the 197cc intake runner, and have the 65cc CNC'd combustion chambers. They run a 2.055" intake valve, and a 1.6" exhaust valve. These heads on my 327 were able to power a 3200 lb truck to a 12.40 1/4 @ 110 MPH.
