The southeastern site of Yongsan Garrison, which will open in August 2020, was formerly used as a US military officer's quarters. Located on the southeastern side of Dunjisan Mountain, the US military officer's quarters site was called "Seobinggo" (literally "Seobinggo") since the early Joseon Dynasty due to the nearby Seobinggo, a place used to store ice during the Joseon Dynasty. Today, the area is still called Seobinggo-dong, Yongsan-gu. Today, the area, including the US military officer's quarters site, is called Yongsan Garrison. However, US soldiers stationed in Yongsan immediately after the fall of Japan did not call it Yongsan Garrison. Instead, they called it "Camp Sobinggo," named after the area's long-standing historical name, Seobinggo. Camp Seobinggo was used from liberation through the Korean War, and after the armistice agreement, the US Eighth Army relocated to Yongsan Garrison, renaming it "Yongsan Garrison" (Yongsan Garrison) as we know it today. The history of this US military officer's quarters site, with its unique location, is as follows. Adjacent to the Han River, this site was used as farmland (rice paddies) since the Japanese colonial period. Later, during the Korean War, when the US Eighth Army rebuilt Yongsan Garrison, a new branch line was installed from Seobinggo Station into the base to facilitate the efficient transport of military supplies (currently an abandoned railroad). This led to the construction of a military warehouse on the northern side of the site, while the railroad naturally defined the western side. In the 1970s, it was used as a US military helipad. In 1986, the 49,368㎡ (approximately 15,000 pyeong) site was officially returned to the South Korean government. The former Korea Housing Corporation (now Korea Land and Housing Corporation) constructed US military officer quarters, which were leased and operated until the end of 2019. The government will open the site of the former US military officer quarters to the public starting in August 2020, prior to the full return of the Yongsan Garrison, to provide a space for the public to experience the development of Yongsan Park and discuss the park's past, present, and future. The garrison's primary housing areas include Loring Village, Lloyd L. Burke Towers, Watkins Ridge and Krzyzowski Hills. Commonly known as Black Hawk Housing Area, Loring Village consists of 16 housing structures, each containing multiple housing units, and was named after U.S. Air Force Major Charles Loring, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his service during the Korean War. In 2004, South Korean-funded construction of the Lloyd L. Burke Towers (commonly known as Burke Towers) was completed.[43] Consisting of two five-story towers, the housing area includes three-, four- and five bedroom units, as well as outdoor barbecue areas, a basketball court and underground parking facility. The towers were named after Army 1st Lt. Lloyd L. Burke, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service during the Korean War. Watkins Ridge housing area consists of 23 housing structures, each containing multiple housing units, and was named after Army Master Sergeant Travis Watkins,[26] who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his service during the Korean War. Krzyzowski Hills housing area consists of 10 housing structures, with multiple housing units each and named after Army Captain Edward Krzyzowski, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his service during the Korean War.[26] Unaccompanied military personnel are assigned to Unaccompanied Personnel Housing on-post such as barracks, Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ), Senior Enlisted Quarters (SEQ), or Bachelor Officer Quarters (BOQ). When on-post housing is not available, unaccompanied military personnel are assigned to off-post quarters.
