As part of our STARS program - Scientists Taking Astronomy to Schools - ANU astronomer Dr Brad Tucker and physics teacher Matt Dodds explain how to set up a Dobsonian Telescope. These are the one that are being given to schools as part of the STARS program and also a very common "beginner" telescope. In this video, Brad and Matt show how to set up your Dobsonian for viewing. A Dobsonian telescope (or Dob for short) is powerful and easy to use. They have a large aperture and therefore excellent at gathering light. So you can view a range of night sky objects, including deep-sky objects such as nebulae, galaxies and star clusters. They are also very robust and easy to set up, transport and operate - making them perfect for schools and beginners. They have an Alt-Azmith mount which can be manually swung up and down, or left and right. More expensive versions have GoTo capabilities to track objects.
