This video presents an excerpt of a performance of Hindustani vocal music. The voice of Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay is accompanied by Nihar Metha on tabla and by Saibal Bandyopadhyay on harmonium. Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay is an authoritative singer of the khyal genre. She comes from an important family of musicians from Calcutta. Her father, Shanka Bandyopadhyay, is a highly appreciated tabla performer, and has been teacher of courses for this instrument at the Fondazione Cini for nearly thirty years. Sangeeta studied with masters of the Lucknow, Patiala, and Indore schools, developing a unique style that is a synthesis of elements from these schools, and performs regularly in India and abroad. Khyal, of which Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay is a specialist, is one of the most important vocal genres of Hindustani (North Indian) music, a genre that requires great technical skills, and versatility in the improvisation of all the subtleties of ragas, the modes of classical Indian music. The video excerpt features a tarana, a virtuosic form whose lyrics comprise percussive syllables (such sa “ta, ra, na tom”, hence the onomatopoeic name). This tarana is set in Raga Saraswati and in a fast tempo 12-beat ektal meter. The performance was organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini.
