Lounge jazz at ease with itself… saxophone swagger and late-night cool drift through the haze. On this day in jazz history… Henry Johnson (Born January 28, 1954) By the late 1960s, the young Henry Johnson was already playing guitar in Memphis, working gospel and R&B gigs. But something was missing from the equation. In 1967, he heard Wes Montgomery. That single moment changed everything, revealing a path into jazz that combined his gospel roots with sophisticated harmonic possibilities. He entered Indiana University in 1973 to develop his craft seriously. Johnson built his reputation on Chicago's South Side before touring with Jack McDuff and working with Donny Hathaway. By 1979, he was playing with Ramsey Lewis, and in 1985 joined Joe Williams' regular group, collaborating with Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Stitt, and Stanley Turrentine. His 1986 debut "You're the One" hit number one on contemporary jazz charts and earned a Grammy nomination. Johnson became what peers call "a guitarist's guitarist," respected for masterful technique rooted in gospel, blues, and jazz traditions. #LoungeJazz #60sJazz #LateNightJazz #JazzLounge #InstrumentalJazz #SmokyJazz #MidCenturyJazz All music (including AI-assisted elements) and visuals are original, curated, and produced by Two Cats Jazz Radio.
