Watch the full ringing sequence of Great Paul, captured by two cameras (Ringer view and Bell view). Great Paul is St Paul’s Cathedral’s bourdon bell - the heaviest and lowest-pitched in its ring. It hangs in the South West Tower, weighs 16.75 Imperial tons (17 metric tonnes), and sounds an E-flat. The bell was cast by John Taylor & Co in Loughborough back in 1881. Moving it down to the City of London required a custom road truck and a steam traction engine, a plan that only came together after casting. An automatic tolling mechanism rang Great Paul from 1971 until it failed in around 2009–10, leaving the bell silent for over a decade. In 2021, we refitted ropes and brought back manual ringing. Great Paul is rung for special occasions such as major services and the Lord Mayor’s Show. Two teams of ringers pull in precise sequence. Each pull is timed to start and control the swing, producing the bell’s deep, resonant tone - the voice of St Paul's Cathedral. 🔔 Subscribe for more hidden stories from St Paul’s Cathedral #GreatPaul #BourdonBell #BellRinging #StPaulsCathedral #ManualRinging #JohnTaylorCo #LondonHistory #EFlat #TractionEngine #HeritageCraft #HistoricBells #SteamTraction
