Venice during Carnival is a wild mix of tradition, performance, and mystery. We spent four days getting lost in the alleys, sipping spritz in local bacari, and exploring the history behind the masks—and it turns out Carnival is a lot more than just costumes and crowds. In this video, I share what surprised me most: the resilience built into the city, the roots of the festival, and how getting lost in Venice is kind of the whole point. The Carnival of Venice started in the Middle Ages (c. 1162) and became especially famous during the 1700s for elaborate celebrations where masks helped blur social classes and identities (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carniva...) 2. Masks Worn Beyond Carnival In the 18th century, Venetian masks were used for more than just Carnival. They appeared at the theater, gambling halls, and evening outings. Wearing masks outside of Carnival led to several laws limiting their use, indicating just how widespread it was. (https://noma.org/behind-mask-18th-cen...) (https://historiamag.com/mask-wearing-...)
