The Yom Kippur War in 1973 left a significant mark on so many Israeli families, including my own. My father, a young man at the time, was deployed to defend the State of Israel in a heroic battle on the Golan Heights. Many of his closest friends from the tank unit were killed while he spent the following years recovering from his severe burns. The physical and emotional burdens from this experience remain with him until today. This song by Naomi Shemer was originally based on the Beatles song Let It Be, translated as ‘Lu Y’hi’. As the war broke, these simple and familiar words were transformed, becoming a symbol of the universal hope for an end to war and violence. On this coming Yom Hazikaron, we stand with the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and pray for a more peaceful future. Video: Tami Shaham Recording: Avi Elbaz Producer: Eli Grunfeld Recorded live at the YMCA Jerusalem during our congregational trip to Israel in December 2018. www.azischwartz.com Lyrics: There is still a white sail on the horizon Opposite a heavy black cloud All that we ask for - may it be And if in the evening windows The light of the holiday candles flickers All that we seek - may it be May it be, may it be - Please - may it be All that we seek - may it be. What is the sound that I hear The cry of the shofar and the sound of drums All that we ask for - may it be If only there can be heard within all this One prayer from my lips also All that we seek - may it be Od yesh mifras lavan ba'ofek mul anan shachor kaved Kol shenevakesh - Lu Yehi. Ve'im bacholonot ha'erev Or nerot hachag ro'ed - Kol shenevakesh - Lu Yehi. Lu Yehi, Lu Yehi, Ana, Lu Yehi Kol shenevakesh - Lu Yehi.
