Treatment of keratoconus depends on the stage of the disease. In early ketratoconus, we can try with corneal collagen cross linking. If it is slightly advances, we can add INTAX, which is intracorneal rings. Corneal transplant for keratoconus is reserved as an end stage disease which is not treatable by any of this. Even for Corneal transplant, we refer to do only a partial thickness transplant called deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty. Their advantages are, it is a very simple procedure, it is easy to maintain because of less number of drops, sutures can removed at an earlier stage and appropriate glasses or contact lenses can be given early. So nothing to worry when the doctor says corneal transplant, just find if it is a partial corneal transplant or a direct corneal transplant.
