Facial skin cancer is quite common, especially in the area surrounding the eyes. Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type. It’s treatment consists of surgical resection in an operating room. This may be done with local anesthesia. Mohs surgery is the best way to eliminate eyelid skin cancer. Mohs surgery allows us to remove the tissue infiltrated by the cancer without disturbing healthy skin. Therefore, the mass is completely removed, but cancer-free skin is preserved. The first step consists of marking the skin affected by the tumor. Local anesthesia is applied in this area. Next, the surgeon removes the carcinoma and the specimen is given to the pathologist for immediate analysis. The specimen is placed on a diagram maintaining it’s original anatomical orientation.
