Through the Strengthening Resilience to Violent Extremism (STRIVE) Global Program, funded by the European Union, Hedayah is providing grants to Albanian Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to implement locally-led counter-extremism projects or conduct empirical research that support national counter-terrorism priorities. Hedayah provided a grant and capacity-building support to the Albanian organizations ASSIST and the Institute for Activism and Social Change (IANS) to implement the project, which operates under the framework of Albania’s “Local Safety Councils.” The project supports the revitalization of the country’s municipal referral system for preventing and countering extremism and violent extremism. It will train over 200 frontline workers from five municipalities that are experiencing the highest levels of returning foreign terrorist fighters and their families. Participants in the project include municipality leaders and representatives from law enforcement, prosecution, legal aid, education, employment, social services, healthcare, business, religious institutions, civil society organizations, as well as the staff from Albania’s National CVE Center and parliamentarians. Through training, frontline workers are equipped to identify, assess, and refer cases of concern to Albania’s National CVE Center through local coordination mechanisms.
