(18 Sep 1999) English/Nat VOICED BY LOUISE BATES The first warships bound for the peacekeeping force in East Timor have set sail from northern Australia. Nine frigates and destroyers left Darwin bound for international waters - in what officials called a "pre-positioning" of naval firepower. A small number of ground troops were aboard the ships - but the main force has yet to be deployed. As the ships left Darwin, the first U-S troops arrived to take part in the international peace keeping force bound for war ravaged East Timor. (0.02) The guided missile frigate H-M-A-S Adelaide was one of the first to set sail in the late afternoon sunshine. (0.10) The nine-ship armada steamed out of Darwin harbour heading for the international waters off East Timor. The fleet is made up of seven Australian navy ships, a British destroyer and a New Zealand navy frigate. The precise details of their deployment hasn't been revealed, as officials simply say the vessels are being sent into positions to cover the arrival of ground troops. The goal of the U.N.-approved peacekeeping force is to restore order to a people who've been shooting and hacking one another to death for two weeks. As the first ships for the international mission left Darwin, a group of 13 U-S Marines touched down in Australia to set up a staging area for the operation. An advance team of peacekeepers is due in the East Timorese capital of Dili soon with the full troop deployment following early next week. (1.00) SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are assisting the Australian international effort for peacekeeping in East Timor. Our role today is.. we are setting up logistics and communications for the command post, for the commander of the U-S forces in effect." (1.21) The troops will spearhead one of Asia's biggest deployments since the Vietnam war.
