Car leaving with the coffin STORYLINE: Egypt's leading Muslim clerics led mourners in special prayers on Thursday for the country's Nobel Prize-winning author Naguib Mahfouz, who was condemned by some Islamic people who regarded certain of his novels as sacrilegious. Mahfouz, the only Arab to have won a Nobel Prize for literature, died on Wednesday aged 94. Mahfouz, whose novels depicted Egyptian life in his beloved corner of ancient Cairo, was admitted to the hospital more than a month ago after falling in his home and injuring his head. Doctors confirmed that he died on Wednesday. At his funeral, his coffin was wrapped in green shroud with the words "there is no God but God" in white letters. Crowds of mourners stood outside the funeral to pay tribute to Mahfouz. A former student of Mahfouz, Ali Saed, was markedly upset, and held a poster of Mahfouz. "I am going through a very difficult time that I am really unable to bear. He was more than a father to me and I cried today even more than I cried when my father died", he said. After the funeral the Grand Shaikh of Al Azhar, Sayed Tantawi, said he would pray to God to have mercy on Mahfouz. "I pray to God Almighty to forgive the international writer Mr Naguib Mahfouz, bestow mercy upon his soul, and take him into heaven." Mahfouz stirred controversy among conservatives with his calls for religious tolerance. In 1994, an Islamic militant stabbed him after accusing him of blasphemy because of one his novels, "Children of Gebelaya," a religious allegory that depicted Islam's prophet, Muhammad. Mahfouz was also stabbed by a militant after a fatwa issued in 1989 by Egyptian radical Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman in which he said that Mahfouz deserved to die for his novel.
