Born on 30th May, 1944, Hutoxi Reporter or Madhumati as she came to be known as later, was attracted to dancing from a very young age. But in orthodox Parsi families in those days, learning dance was frowned upon but somehow Madhumati’s father who was a judge, encouraged her and let her learn as she was very talented and interested. She trained in classical dance for eight years and was highly proficient in Bharat Natyam, Kathak and Manipuri dance styles. She got the opportunity to display her classical dancing abilities in the superb classical number from the film Talaash (1969) which fetched her a lot of appreciation. Apparently, when the film was sent to an International film festival the authorities impressed by her classical dance number decided to retain only that portion in their archives and this proved to be a big boost for her talent. It was the famous producer Dirubahi Desai who happened to be the first one to spot young Madhumati’s talent. He was the Chief guest at a function where she was dancing on stage and wanted to sign her as a heroine for his film. But her father was against her joining films as an actress. After much convincing she was given permission to do just one dance number in the 1957 film Raja Harishchandra, but not much information is available about this film. Then in 1960 she forayed into acting in the film Zameen Ke Taare, where she played the role of Daisy Irani’s stepmother. As there were no romantic scenes, her father allowed her to act in this film. It was a very touching film about two small children Daisy Irani and Honey Irani who set out on a journey in search of God to give them back their mother. Though Madhumati had only a small role, she had taken her first steps towards acting. It was from this film her name changed from Hutoxi to Madhumati. Later on, she continued to act in small roles in Hindi films and as a heroine in Punjabi films. Her last Hindi film was Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) where she had a small role opposite Mukri.
