Have We Misunderstood the Concept of a “Recension”? (Bill Warren)

This paper was presented at the IGNTP Text Critical Thursdays Seminar via Zoom on 25th June 2020. Have We Misunderstood the Concept of a “Recension”? A Review of Early Church References to Textual Recensions of the Greek New Testament. A common perspective today in New Testament textual criticism is to discount the concept of “recensions” as being helpful for understanding the origins of textual variants. This perspective seems warranted based on our current knowledge of the transmission history of the NT text. But have we correctly understood what was meant by those in the Early Church who refer to “recensions” of the text? This study isolates the mentions of recensions by writers in the Early Church and then presents a contextualized understanding of those passages in their ancient contexts, thereby clarifying the ancient concept of a recension versus some modern depictions of the concept.
