Here's some gameplay of the Sega Genesis version of Batman & Robin. I'm not sure how far I actually made it since I've never completed this game before, but I continued once before giving up out of frustration. First of all, this game makes a great first impression. A fever-dream aesthetic that lands somewhere in-between the comics and the animated series, with a striking color scheme and nice animation. Furthermore, there are some absolutely mindblowing effects that the Genesis is pushing out; with some fantastic 3D-ish backgrounds throughout the levels and very detailed spritework. What also needs to be mentioned is the soundtrack; dark, gritty techno that sounds wonderful on the Genesis soundchip and really does fit with the action. The gameplay is more like a side-scrolling shooter than anything; sure, if the enemies get too close you can physically attack them (even punching and headbutting machinery lol) and you do have a handy jumpkick, but for 95% of time you'll be furiously whipping gradually powered-up batarangs towards the baddies in a frenzy that would make Joe Musashi proud. All of that sounds like it should make an amazing game, and it is....right up until you get to the flying section in the second stage. From this point on, the levels afterwards just becomes a tedious exercise in frustration. It is a hard game overall without a doubt, but once you get to this area it seems as if the developers gave up on good gameplay design and just decided to flood each area with cheap, unrelenting enemies that are nearly impossible to avoid. Oh and btw, the aforementioned flying stage where this game starts falling apart? It's 18 FKN MINUTES long! ONE STAGE! On a Genesis game! As a matter of fact, depending on your skill level at taking down the enemy aircraft, you could be on there even longer! That is absolutely horrible design. The levels after this all follow the same bs template as this stage; long, drawn-out levels where you fight the same crap enemies over and over again until the game decides to let you progress forward a few feet where you get to do it again. If you play this game up until the first flying stage, it may subjectively be the best Batman game outside of the Arkham series. Awesome visuals, music and a two-player simultaneous mode should've made this the best old-school Batman game ever. But the latter half of the game really drops the ball. It's almost as if a different developer took over that area of the game. It is worth a try though; at least to experience the first half of the game :) #sidescroller #sega #batman
