Some people had asked if the ice screw could be used to measure ice thickness. The real test of ice strength is to poke the ice good and hard every so often (with a pik pole, or nordic skating poles, etc). This gives you the best info about ice safety. But some people have bad shoulders, wrists, etc and too much jabbing is difficult (and it is hard work trying to cut a chunk of 4-6” ice out with an axe! An Ice saw works tho) So I made a little video on Sebago today showing one way to measure thickness with a mountaineering Ice screw. You can drill into the ice a few inches, take it out and check if you have cut thru into the water yet, then lather rinse repeat till you strike water. But you can also actually feel when the screw pops thru into the water. This gives you some good information (but not as good as testing ice strength or cutting out a chunk: sebago has a weird layer of slush, Water, and ice on top of the base Ice and you cant really test that with the ice screw)
