In May 1944, German reconnaissance photographed a massive invasion fleet in British waters—250 warships preparing to strike at Calais. Hitler kept 200,000 troops waiting for the attack. There was just one problem: every single ship was made of painted canvas stretched over wooden frames. Built by a theatre set designer for £40,000, this phantom fleet was history's greatest military deception. Whilst the fake ships sat in Suffolk, the real invasion hit Normandy 200 miles away. For seven crucial weeks, 17 German divisions defended beaches that would never be attacked, fooled by props that weighed less than a captain's luggage. Operation Fortitude South: when Britain won D-Day with painted tarps and Hitler's own expectations. #WW2History #DDay #MilitaryDeception #OperationFortitude #BritishHistory #WW2Facts #MilitaryIntelligence #WarHistory #1944 #PhantomFleet
