[Sonic Hacking Contest 2023] Sonic the Hedgehog: Save the Moon - Normal Playthrough

Sonic the Hedgehog: Save the Moon is a Sonic ROM hack by Super_Sonic_321 that has loads of potential to be awesome. Its strong suit would be the artwork, with the first and the last zones being my own personal highlights. The music selection is also pretty nice. The weak point of this hack, however, is the general gameplay experience. We have Sonic, who's been given the Spin Dash and ridden of the Rolling Jump Lock, but retains the speed caps from Sonic 1, which I find quite annoying. Additionally, the level design doesn't exactly do this hack justice: hidden springs, backtracking as a means of punishment, and the entirety of the second zone are some of the things that really bring down this ROM hack, gameplay wise. With adjustments to the level design, this could prove to be an amazing ROM hack: it's got the looks of one, all it has to do is play like one, and it might end up sitting among the ranks of the greatest ROM hacks of all time.
