In this Justice Talks panel event, a collection of our UTS Law alumni and staff discussed issues including: What does a career in social justice look like? What are some of the tactics and tools used to advocate for systemic change? And how can the law function as both an instrument of, and a tool to challenge, injustice. Join us as we hear from: Gomeroi poet, lawyer and senior researcher at Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning UTS Alison Whittaker, whose work draws attention to the systemic failings and racism of the Australian criminal justice system that contribute to Aboriginal deaths in custody; Lawyer and General Counsel at GetUp! Zaahir Edries, executive member of and former president of the Muslim Legal Network (NSW), whose work centres around advocating for social justice and inclusion; and Legal academic Professor Thalia Anthony, whose research expertise in criminal law and Indigenous peoples and the law has informed policy and debates in relation to seeking systemic change and remedies for wrongs inflicted on Indigenous communities.
