Dutch Design Week 2025: impression of Sectie C

English version: Sectie-C in Eindhoven is a creative hub located in the Tongelre district, on a former industrial site where, until the early 2000s, the company Nolte produced streetlights and traffic signs. Since 2010, the area has been transformed into a vibrant community of studios, workshops, and ateliers for designers, artists, and craftspeople. During Dutch Design Week (DDW) 2025, Sectie-C once again served as one of the main locations, offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look into the workspaces of its creators. In the coming years, the site will undergo major changes: the municipality and developers plan to turn it into a mixed residential and work area with over a thousand new homes. This means the current broedplaats, in its raw industrial form, will disappear — the place where hundreds of makers have worked and inspired each other for years. Although there are plans to preserve some creative functions, the site’s unique spirit and freedom will inevitably be lost. It is a regrettable development in which the real-estate sector once again takes the lead, replacing a living cultural ecosystem with profit logic. A society that marginalizes art, design, and culture undermines its own commitment to the good, the true, and the beautiful. Nederlands: Sectie-C in Eindhoven is een creatieve locatie in de wijk Tongelre, gevestigd op een voormalig industrieel terrein waar tot begin deze eeuw onder meer de firma Nolte lantaarnpalen en verkeersborden produceerde. Sinds 2010 is het gebied omgevormd tot een broedplaats met studio’s, ateliers en werkplaatsen van ontwerpers, kunstenaars en ambachtslieden. Tijdens Dutch Design Week (DDW) 2025 fungeerde Sectie-C opnieuw als een van de hoofdlocaties, waar bezoekers de deuren van werkplaatsen konden openen en een “behind the scenes” ervaring kregen. Het terrein verandert de komende jaren ingrijpend: gemeente en projectontwikkelaars willen er een gemengd woon-werkgebied met ruim duizend woningen realiseren. Daarmee verdwijnt de broedplaats in haar rauwe, industriële vorm — de plek waar honderden makers jarenlang werkten en elkaar inspireerden. Ondanks plannen om creatieve functies deels te behouden, gaat de unieke vrijheid van het terrein verloren. Een spijtige ontwikkeling, waarin de vastgoedsector opnieuw de toon zet en een levendig cultureel ecosysteem plaatsmaakt voor winstlogica.
