Jharkhand Tribal Haat Bazar & Local Bar : Chicken Patpoda + Gulgula + Hadiya (rice beer) + Potluck

In the final episode of our second Jharkhand Food Series, we began the day with a visit to the local haat along with our host, Anurag. The market was alive with energy and colours, stalls lined with fresh vegetables, pulses, grains, and forest produce, alongside tools, and other everyday essentials. The haat truly reflected the rhythm of local rural life, where people from nearby villages came together to buy, sell, and exchange not just goods but stories and smiles. After a stroll, we stopped by a handia stall to taste the local rice beer, an integral part of Jharkhand’s culture and community gatherings. Brewed from fermented rice and herbs, it carries the essence of the land and the wisdom of traditional fermentation practices passed down through generations. From there, we made our way to The Open Farm for a potluck organised by their team. The gathering brought together a diverse mix of people connected through food , chefs, entrepreneurs, vloggers, influencers, and local food enthusiasts. Each had brought something from their kitchen to share, there was sudi bhaat, dumbu, aalu phutkal, rickwach, jalapeno guava, and many more interesting dishes. The table soon became a melting pot of flavours and conversations, where food was just the beginning. As night fell, we joined Dr. Manisha, Abhishek, and Nitesh for a hearty dinner that beautifully brought together some classic and some reimagined tribal dishes. The spread included mahau pulao, fish pathphoda, sandhana banda, bamboo chicken, balushahi custard with pears, and mahua kheer. Every dish had a story behind it, about ingredients, memories, and the inspiration drawn from the land. The discussions flowed from recipes and ingredients to ideas around sustainability, food storytelling, and the importance of reviving local traditions.
