In this tutorial, we discuss the process of downloading (CHIRPS) satellite rainfall data product for free, using Climate Engine portal. CHIRPS stands for "Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data" It is a high-resolution, global precipitation dataset that combines satellite imagery with in-situ station data to produce accurate and detailed precipitation estimates and CHIRPS was originally developed by the Climate Hazards Group at the University of California in Santa Barbara. In the first part, we will discuss how to use Climate Engine portal to specify information like the spatial extent, date range for downloading precipitation data as a raster dataset, which you can then import to GIS software like QGIS to visualise and conduct further analysis. In the second part, we are going to delve into the actual daily data itself, by downloading the precipitation data as a time series, which you could import into spreadsheet processing software like Microsoft Excel to perform further analyses.
