Dr. Omalu (Will Smith from Men In Black and Ali) is explaining the damages caused by football on a human brain to Dr. Ron Hamilton (Stephen Moyer) and to Dr. Steven T. DeKosky (Eddie Marsan from Happy-Go-Lucky). He tells them that Webster died from those repeated concussions on his head. Former football player Mike Webster (David Morse from Changeling) is found dead after years of self-mutilation and homelessness. Dr. Bennet Omalu (Will Smith from Men In Black and Ali), a forensic pathologist, handles Webster's autopsy and concludes that Webster died as a result of the long-term effects of repeated blows to the head, a disorder he terms chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Dr. Omalu publishes his findings, which are dismissed by the NFL. Over several years, Dr. Omalu discovers additional deceased NFL players exhibited symptoms very similar to Webster's. Dr. Omalu is subjected to considerable pressure to back down from his efforts and the Omalus are forced to leave, relocating to California where he takes a job with a coroner's office. Three years later, Dr. Omalu is vindicated when former NFL Players Association executive Duerson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje from Suicide Squad) commits suicide and admits in his suicide note that Dr. Omalu was right. Dr. Omalu is invited to address an NFLPA conference on concussions and CTE. Amid growing scrutiny from Congress, the NFL is forced to take the concussion issue more seriously, and in 2011, NFL players sue the league for not properly informing them of the risk of CTE.
