(14 May 2015) Residents in northern Colombia have welcomed a recent government decision to halt the use of a herbicide that has been a key part of the US-financed efforts to wipe out cocaine crops in the country. The move came after the World Health Organisation (WHO) classified glyphosate, the herbicide used by the government to spray cocaine crops, as a carcinogen. President Juan Manuel Santos' announcement that Colombia will seek other ways to destroy coca plants has lent new strength to scores of local farmers, whose claims of health problems caused by the herbicide had been dismissed by manufacturers. Manufacturers of glyphosate-based products strongly rejected WHO's March report, citing a 2012 ruling by the US Environmental Protection Agency that the herbicide was safe. In the communities of Crucito, Puerto Frasquillo and Puerto Libertador, where the practice of fumigation is widespread, residents have been experiencing health problems, including birth deformations and abortions, according to local health promotion specialist, Omar Miranda. More than 4 million acres (1.6 million hectares) of land in Colombia have been sprayed with the popular weed killer over the past two decades to kill the plants whose leaves produce cocaine.
