Endometrial cancer, a subtype of uterine cancer, is the most common form of gynecological cancer. And it's getting to be more common. Once diagnosed only in the post-menopausal crowd, endometrial cancer is now seen more frequently in younger women. The reason? Obesity is one of the risk factors for endometrial cancer and obesity is on the rise in America. The biggest problem is the gold standard to treat endometrial cancer is a hysterectomy, which was not a big concern among older women. But for younger women who are still in their childbearing years, removing their uterus is problematic. "That's why this new study is so important," explains Gynecologist Oncologist Jacob Tangir MD , co-founder of The Center for Gynecologic Oncology in Miramar. "Past research indicated women who took birth control pills or used an IUD had a lower incidence of endometrial cancer. This new study followed 165 women who either had endometrial hyperplasia ( a precancerous condition of the endometrium ) or Stage 1 endometrial cancer where the cancer is confined to the uterus. Six months after inserting an IUD, 825 of those with precancer and 43% of those with stage 1 had no sign of cancer. " The significant response for women with stage 1 cancer suggests that a hormonal IUD may be a viable alternative to surgery in certain cases."
