Civil War in Yemen | Political Crisis Explained

The Arab Springs affected many countries in the middle east, among which was Yemen. It is still seeing the effects of it today, in an ongoing civil war. To understand the war, we have to learn about how Yemen was formed. Before 1990, Yemen was divided into North Yemen, an Islamic state allied with Saudi Arabia and NATO, and South Yemen, a marxist state allied with the USSR and China. Saleh was president of North Yemen for 12 years when the countries united, and he became the president of Yemen as well, ruling all the way till 2012, for a total of 33 years! In 1994, there was a civil war where the Southern secessionists claimed that the North had marginalised them, but this was crushed in a month by President Saleh. There were attacks committed by the Al Qaeda later, and also a Houthi insurgency in 2004 led by Hussein al Houthi. President Saleh successfully crushed both of them, and won the 2006 election. There were allegations of voter fraud, raised in 2008, and then again in 2011 during the Arab Springs, where Saleh resigned as President, and Hadi became President in 2012. The country was unstable, and in 2014 when the oil prices were increased such that they were "unbearable", the Houthis invaded the capital city of Yemen, Sanaa. From 2015 onwards, the civil war had begun, where Saudi Arabia and NATO support the Government, and the Houthis were supported by Saleh and Iran (allegedly). Saleh withdrew his support in December 2017, and was assassinated soon after. The Southern Secessionists gained ground in 2018 by taking hold of the city of Aden, the former capital of South Yemen. The UAE is backing them, and they also have a loose alliance with the Government of Yemen. In the midst of all of this are the people of Yemen, trapped in a civil war. The humanitarian situation is beyond terrible. 20 million people (2/3 of Yemen) are in need of aid.
