Some parents in Maple Grove are questioning a recent proposal that would change which elementary school their children attend. The proposal involves changing a boundary line, which determines where children in the district go to school. About 100 kids in one Census area who currently attend Basswood Elementary would be moved to nearby Oak View Elementary. Administrators proposed the boundary changes at the Jan. 7 Osseo School Board meeting, saying Basswood Elementary is currently overcrowded due to new development in the area and increased enrollment. The proposal includes adjusting the boundary line and moving about 100 children in one Census area from Basswood Elementary over to Oak View Elementary. About 40 students in the affected Census area, who are entering 5th or 6th grade in the 2014-2015 school year, would be allowed to stay at Basswood until they move to secondary school. And lastly, under the proposal, open enrollment at Basswood would close. Not all parents are on board with this plan. They only recently learned of the proposal and want more time to look at and discuss options before a final decision is made. "The concern with the proposal is really the timing and how rapidly this has unfolded," said Chad Wieneke, a parent of a Basswood Elementary student. Some parents are also frustrated because they moved to a particular neighborhood specifically so their kids could attend Basswood. "We had been very intentional in our choice to make Basswood the school we would raise our kids and educate our kids in, so we were, of course, really disappointed," said parent Kamryn Nelson. The Osseo District says these changes are part of a larger plan to restructure schools and stabilize enrollment. Superintendent Kate Maguire hopes upcoming meetings will clear up any confusion. "We hope to be able to communicate why the change is occurring, what is the change that is occurring or proposed to occur, and how we can help families transition," she said. If you are a parent affected by this proposal and would like to attend of the informational meetings, they are being held on Tuesday and Friday in the Basswood Elementary School Media Center. Tuesday's meeting is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday's meeting is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The school board is scheduled to vote on the issue at its Jan. 21 meeting.
