'Can Pac' Is Can Back! March 2025 saw the long awaited return to steam of the Mid Hants Railway's flagship locomotive, SR 'Merchant Navy Class' 4-6-2 No.35005 'Canadian Pacific', affectionately known as 'Can Pac'. Withdrawn in 2008 after the expiry of its boiler ticket, 35005 has been subject to a lengthy and challenging overhaul, which began in 2011 and subsequently necessitated the construction of the first brand new inner firebox for a Merchant Navy locomotive in the preservation era! Following a series of light and loaded test runs, 'Can Pac' was officially launched back into traffic on Wednesday 19th March, during a private ceremony at Alresford Station, with its first public runs taking place between March 21st & 23rd. Throughout its relaunch the Bulleid Pacific would run alongside its smaller sibling, SR 'Battle of Britain' Class 4-6-2 No.34072 '257 Squadron', making its last runs of its visit to the MHR, before moving down to the Swanage Railway to star in their spring steam gala. This video covers the pair at work up 'The Alps' during the Friday and Sunday. I had intended on visiting the MHR earlier in the year for a few more shots of 34072, but kept backing out of it as well as any other potential outings. As such, I haven't been out with the camera since the start of the year, so the return of Can Pac was just the excuse I needed to finally get back out filming, as well as bagging those extra shots of the visiting 'Spamcan'. You certainly can't go wrong with a double dose of Bulleid action and it was a decent couple of day's filming, made all the better by having some decent company throughout 👌 Filmed on March 21st & 23rd, using a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone. I hope you enjoy the video. If you did, please like, comment, subscribe, and make sure you check your subscriptions page, so you never miss a video; it really does help a lot! Thanks.
