Retrograde Intra-renal Surgery is the meaning of RIRS. Removal of kidney stone through the urinary tract i.e.urethra, bladder and ureter by using a very narrow visualising/optical instrument i.e scope is RIRS surgery. Most patients ask what is PCNL and RIRS. RIRS defers from PCNL, as in PCNL kidney stone is removed by making a very small hole (key hole) into the kidney. Usually 1 day to 2 days is how many days rest after RIRS is advised. RIRS as such is a very safe procedure with very few complications. Infection, renal pelvis damage, extravasation of fluid are the complications of RIRS. Does RIRS damage kidney – yes but rarely. Most often stent is necessary after RIRS, but why stent is placed after RIRS. The reason is to drain the stone dust, to prevent clot colic and to prevent ureteral damage. Most of the time Stent is placed 1-2 weeks before the RIRS surgery to dilate the ureter so that flexible URS scope can pass through it for the RIRS surgery. Stent removal is not painful if done under some form of anaesthesia like sedation or GA. Which is better PCNL or RIRS – it depends upon many factors like size of the stone, location of the stone in kidney, patient condition and co-morbidities, etc. For more information or to book an appointment, call: +91 9324502572 / 9987644028 or visit: https://www.mitrurologyassociates.com/
