Elijah McCoy's parents escaped slavery in Kentucky through the Underground Railroad. They risked everything for freedom—and to build a future for their children. Despite being extremely poor, they saved every penny to send 15-year-old Elijah to Scotland for an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. Five years later, McCoy returned to the United States with his certification, ready to work as an engineer. But in post-Civil War America, nobody would hire him. Not because he lacked skill—but because he was Black. So McCoy took the only job he could get: fireman and oilman for the Michigan Central Railroad. He shoveled two tons of coal per hour and risked his life manually lubricating hot, moving machinery. This wasn't just dirty work—it was high-stakes work where one slip meant a derailment or a lost life. Working in a makeshift machine shop in his spare time, McCoy invented the automatic lubricating cup—a device that oiled engines while they were in motion. Revolutionary. Life-saving. Efficient. He went on to earn 57 U.S. patents. But McCoy lacked capital to manufacture his inventions, so he sold his patent rights just to survive. Companies made cheap knockoffs. Sometimes they'd cancel orders when they found out he was Black. Despite revolutionizing the railroad industry and making millions for railroad companies, McCoy died penniless in 1929. But here's the thing about a true Outlier: They can take the money, and they can take the credit - but they can never take the excellence. His devices were so superior that railroad inspectors would ask, "Is this the Real McCoy?"—demanding his genuine system, not the imitations. That's where the phrase comes from.
