🧪 Turning Milk into Rope! 🥛➡️🧵 In this experiment, I attempted to transform milk into a rope-like material using casein polymerization, a process once used to make early plastics! First, I heated the milk 🔥 and added acetic acid (CH₃COOH) to separate the casein protein from the liquid whey. But using concentrated acetic acid caused incomplete coagulation, forming tiny lumps instead of a solid curd. So, I tried again with diluted acetic acid, and this time, the casein coagulated properly! 💥 After straining and pressing the casein for 12 hours ⏳, I treated it with potassium hydroxide (KOH) ⚗️ to modify its structure. Then, I prepared a polymerization solution using sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and acetaldehyde (CH₃CHO). My first attempt at forming a thread with a syringe failed miserably 😩, so I bent the needle and switched to a Petri dish setup. And then, after two hours of continuous trying and failing—something incredible happened! 😲 A fine, thread-like structure appeared in the Petri dish 🧵✨, while in the beaker, a floating plastic-like layer formed! Chemical Reactions Involved: 1️⃣ Milk Protein Coagulation: Casein (milk protein) + CH₃COOH → Coagulated Casein + Whey 2️⃣ Casein Modification with KOH: Coagulated Casein + KOH → Modified Casein 3️⃣ Polymerization Reaction: Casein + CH₃CHO + H₂SO₄ → Cross-linked Casein Polymer (Plastic-like Fiber) This experiment demonstrates how proteins can be cross-linked into a polymer, just like Galalith (milk plastic) was made historically. Though the rope wasn’t perfect, it was a fascinating attempt at creating biodegradable plastic fibers from milk! ♻️ 🔥 Experiments aren’t just about perfection—they’re about learning from mistakes!
