Stone nubs or bosses – the protrusions extending out from building stone used in ancient megalithic monuments around the world – are one of the most talked about ancient architectural phenomena on the internet today. You can find them on stonework all over the world, from Cusco, Peru, all the way to the Pyramids of Giza, even inside the Great Pyramid itself. But why do nubs exist? What was their function? Well, in this video, I'm sharing one specific viewpoint, on one specific locality and time period – Old Kingdom Egypt – ideas put forward by Uvo Holscher, a German Egyptologist who lived between 1878 and 1963, and who is most remembered for his work on the Khafre Pyramid of Giza and its associated temples.
