Moderator: Andy Stewart, KB1OIQ Description: Andy (KB1OIQ) Stewart has created a popular collection of Free Software and Open Source software called "Andy's Ham Radio Linux" (AHRL). For a long time, this involved remastering Xubuntu Linux. Most recently, this software collection has been enhanced so that it can be easily installed on top of your existing installation of Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint, as well as Raspberry Pi OS for RPI 4/5. AHRL has been available since 2011, with over 100,000 downloads to date. Andy will discuss these updates and also give an overview of the available software. With a background in Linux dating back to the '90s and a long-standing passion for ham radio, the presenter walks through the history, motivation, and ongoing development of this comprehensive Linux software collection tailored for amateur radio operators. From its humble beginnings as a remastered Xubuntu distro to a flexible, multi-distro install script supporting Raspberry Pi and other popular Linux flavors, the project has evolved significantly. The presentation includes personal anecdotes, community engagement, and a strong emphasis on open-source values. This talk also highlights the wide array of ham radio-related applications bundled in the software—from digital modes, rig control, and antenna modeling to satellite tracking and STEM-focused tools for the ARRL Teachers Institute. The presenter emphasizes usability, maintainability, and community-driven improvement, noting recent successes such as reduced install size, expanded hardware support, and over 100,000 downloads. Whether you're restoring vintage gear, chasing DX, or teaching the next generation, Andy’s Ham Radio Linux aims to make amateur radio more accessible, enjoyable, and Linux-friendly for everyone. Recorded at Hamvention 2025 in Dayton, Ohio.
