In this discussion, our panel of experts will help you understand what journalists and news organisations are doing to harness generative AI's benefits while mitigating the risks – and predict what lies ahead of us. Generative AI promises journalists a lot: opportunities to streamline content creation, automate tedious tasks like transcription and enhance their investigative reporting with data analysis. It enables a more personalised news experience and faster reporting... but also raises challenges such as misinformation, bias and ethical concerns around transparency. AI's potential to replace some journalism roles sparks debates about job security and editorial integrity. Our panel of experts: Aimee Rinehart – senior product manager for AI strategy at global news agency Associated Press. Before joining AP, she was deputy director of First Draft's New York bureau helping journalists and newsrooms identify, verify and report on mis- and disinformation through the 2018 and 2020 U.S. election cycles. Felix Simon – research fellow in AI and digital news at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University. A former journalist, Felix has been researching the implications of AI in journalism and the news since 2019 and has given evidence to inquiries by the UK House of Lords and House of Commons, press regulator IMPRESS, and the United Nations. Felix also frequently advises media organisations on AI. Sophia Smith Galer – a digital journalist, author and and social media influencer. Her vertical video news explainers have won her a loyal following (more than 160m views) as well as the Georgina Henry prize at last year's Media Freedom Awards, given to women pioneering digital innovation in journalism. Sophia has created her own AI tool, Sophina, to help journalists and experts create video scripts for TikToks and Reels. Chris Stokel-Walker – one of journalism's most prolific freelances, writing regularly for the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Wired, Fast Company, New Scientist, Guardian, Times, Telegraph and many more. A lecturer in journalism at Newcastle University, Chris is author of several books that explain key components of our online world, including his latest, How AI Ate the World. This discussion panel is brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab at Newcastle University.
