In this video, I cut one of the best crystal opals I’ve worked on in years — a knobby from a $12,000 parcel that completely exceeded expectations. At just 23 carats in the rough, this stone didn’t look huge at first, but once the wheel started turning, the color told a very different story. This crystal opal revealed intense red, green, and aqua blue play-of-color with incredible depth and 3D movement. The challenge? Deep sand spots that threatened to ruin the color bar. Every decision mattered — where to face the stone, how much color to sacrifice, and how far I could push the cut without losing what made this opal special. The result is a double-sided crystal opal with a high dome, exceptional clarity, and color that rivals (and honestly beats) the last crystal opal I cut from this parcel. Finished at around 7.5 carats and valued at roughly $33,000, this is easily the best crystal opal I’ve cut in the last two years.
