Flying to Svalbard is like a dream come true! And I was looking forward to (hopefully) seeing a Svalbard Polar Bear face to face on this journey. Although Svalbard is part of Norway, it is an independent territory and not part of the Schengen Area. As a result, flying from Oslo to Svalbard is considered to be an international flight. The flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen Airport took three hours, and I finally arrived in Svalbard Airport around 1:30 in the morning - the sun started to rise about 20 minutes later. Visit Svalbard offers a free bike rental, which you can arrange while you're in town. The official Svalbard tourism information, in center Longyearbyen, is a great place to start your Svalbard experience. I was very intrigued with the Svalbard Polar Bear protection measure, so I looked for more information on rifle and gun regulation in Svalbard. I visited Longyear 78 grader, an amazing outdoor store, where you can rent or purchase polar bear guns (or more accurately, polar bear rifle) To be clear, polar bears are an endangered species and it is not possible to hunt a polar bear in Svalbard. That said, there are tons of polar bears in Svalbard - and you have to carry a rifle and polar bear protection if you need to step outside the Longyearbyen city center.
