The first stop on my east coast tour. Shoeburyness, located at the eastern edge of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, holds a significant place in Britain’s military history. Its strategic coastal position at the mouth of the Thames Estuary made it an ideal location for artillery testing and defence. In the mid-19th century, the War Office established the Shoebury Garrison and ranges, which quickly became one of the most important artillery testing and training sites in the UK. The area was used extensively for weapons experimentation, including trials of heavy guns and coastal defences, which continued well into the 20th century. The remnants of military buildings, batteries, and observation posts still dot the landscape, offering a powerful reminder of its former role. During both World Wars, Shoeburyness played a vital role in defending the Thames and London from potential enemy attacks. The area hosted anti-aircraft training and coastal artillery units, and its proximity to the estuary made it a key location for monitoring maritime activity. Today, parts of the former garrison have been redeveloped into housing, but much of the military architecture remains visible, and certain areas are still used by the Ministry of Defence.
