Rugged Gorilla Glass® Optical Windows for Defense EO Imaging Systems Contact us for technical guidance or a quote: sales@dmphotonics.com http://www.dmphotonics.com Electro-optical (EO) imaging systems used in defense and security applications operate in demanding environments where mechanical durability, optical clarity, and long-term reliability are equally critical. Gorilla Glass® optical windows offer a compelling solution for protecting visible-band EO sensors while maintaining high image quality in compact and lightweight system architectures. Gorilla Glass is a chemically strengthened aluminosilicate glass engineered to withstand impact, abrasion, and mechanical stress far beyond conventional soda-lime or borosilicate glass. Through ion-exchange strengthening, high surface compressive stress is introduced, significantly improving resistance to scratching, cracking, and shock. For defense EO imaging systems deployed in field conditions—where vibration, handling damage, airborne debris, and environmental exposure are common—this mechanical robustness directly translates into improved mission reliability and reduced maintenance. From an optical perspective, Gorilla Glass provides excellent transmission across the visible spectrum (approximately 400–700 nm), making it well suited for day-vision EO sensors, situational awareness cameras, alignment optics, and targeting subsystems operating at visible wavelengths. When paired with anti-reflection (AR) coatings on both surfaces, Fresnel losses can be minimized, delivering high throughput and low ghosting without introducing perceptible image degradation. This is especially important for compact EO systems where signal margins may be limited. A key advantage of Gorilla Glass windows is their ability to be manufactured in very thin form factors while retaining mechanical strength. Thin windows reduce optical path length, minimize focus shift, and support low-SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) system designs—a critical requirement for soldier-worn sensors, unmanned platforms, portable surveillance devices, and compact targeting payloads. Reduced thickness also lowers weight and eases integration into sealed or pressurized EO housings. Although Gorilla Glass is not a classical optical catalog material, it is well matched to non-diffraction-limited imaging systems, which represent the majority of rugged defense EO applications. Standard optical polishing on both sides typically provides sufficient surface quality for high-contrast visible imaging, while avoiding the cost and lead time associated with ultra-precision optics. For protective windows, the optical role is primarily transmission and environmental isolation, rather than wavefront shaping—making Gorilla Glass a practical and cost-effective choice. Environmental durability further enhances the suitability of Gorilla Glass for defense EO systems. The material exhibits strong resistance to humidity, temperature cycling, and thermal shock, supporting operation across wide climatic ranges. Combined with robust AR coatings designed for military environments, Gorilla Glass optical windows can maintain performance under prolonged exposure to harsh operational conditions. Typical defense applications include protective windows for EO cameras, visible-band targeting and alignment optics, sensor covers for surveillance systems, ruggedized imaging modules for UAS payloads, and compact EO enclosures for portable and vehicle-mounted platforms. In these roles, Gorilla Glass optical windows help balance optical performance with survivability, enabling reliable imaging in environments where standard optical materials may fail. As defense EO imaging systems continue to trend toward miniaturization, ruggedization, and system integration, Gorilla Glass optical windows provide a proven pathway to achieving durable, lightweight, and optically efficient protection for mission-critical sensors.
